A 3-month-old baby has been fatally attacked by a family's wolf-dog hybrid in Alabama. BBC News reports that the baby died as a result of injuries caused by the animal.

"It has been confirmed that one of our children was killed by an animal and was unresponsive to his injuries until he was taken to the hospital," Mayor Tony Picklesimer said in a statement.

Police said they were called to the baby's home after receiving a call about an animal attack. The baby was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the attack.

Police described the animal as a "wolf hybrid" that was kept by the baby's family as a pet as they said investigations into the circumstances leading to the baby's death continue.

Mayor Picklesimer told CBS that there were other children inside the home at the time of the incident.

But what is a wolf hybrid and are they legal to keep as pets?

According to the International Wolf Center in Minnesota, a wolf-dog hybrid is the offspring of a domestic dog and a wolf mated. Expert Narvaez said owning a wolf-dog hybrid as a pet can be challenging because of their complex and unpredictable behavior.

Federal law in the US classifies wolf hybrids as pets, making it legal to own them as pets.
