Two years of war to conquer it, Zelensky: Russians have entered the city of
Prokovsk, Ukraine

Russian troops are carrying out a coordinated offensive in eastern Ukraine and have gained a foothold in the strategic center of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Moscow's soldiers outnumber Kiev's in the area 8-1 and Ukraine cannot afford this, Zelensky added, insisting that Russia had not yet "achieved the planned result."

Russia has been trying to capture Pokrovsk for two years. The key supply and transportation hub provides supplies and reinforcements to the eastern front, and would bring Moscow closer to conquering the entire Donetsk region.

This would also put the heavily fortified "fortress belt" cities of Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka, and Druzhkivka in easier reach for Moscow.

Zelensky said drone images showed that about 200 Russian soldiers were inside Pokrovsk.

Describing the situation as "difficult", he previously said there was widespread heavy fighting and "sabotage groups" had entered the city.

However, he dismissed reports from Russia's Chief of the General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, that Ukrainian troops were completely surrounded.

In an update on Tuesday, Russia's defense ministry said its forces had surrounded Ukrainian troops around the main railway station and cleared the city's Troyanda district of Ukrainian forces.

A soldier from the 155th Ukrainian Brigade, Artem Pribylnov, dismissed the idea that Ukrainian troops were surrounded in a "cauldron" in Pokrovsk.

"But war has changed and is now very technological," he said.

In previous attacks there had been a way out of the trap where troops could drive in and out, he said, but now drones controlled the entry points, which made it "extremely dangerous."

"Maybe that's why the Russians claim to have surrounded Pokrovsk even if there is no physical siege of the city?" he suggested.

According to Captain Hryhoriy Shapoval, spokesman for Ukraine's Eastern operational group, 79 attacks have been repelled near Pokrovsk since Monday, almost a third of the total of 218 attacks recorded across the entire front line.

He said that Russian troops had concentrated a large number of troops and equipment near Pokrovsk and were using armored vehicles to cover their infantry.

"That's why it's hard to stop them," he said.

He added that Kiev troops normally used drones to counter the Russian advance, but foggy and rainy weather conditions had made it more difficult to detect and destroy infantry troops.

The situation in and around Pokrovsk illustrates the high cost of moving the front line forward, even by just a few meters.

Last week, Ukrainian media reported that Russian forces were engaging in street battles and targeting Ukrainian positions, including drone operators.

Away from cities, drone technology means Russian and Ukrainian forces are able to strike each other deep on either side of the front line.
