The Ecuadorian MP, Viviana Velos, chairperson of the commission for the case called 'The Great Godfather', where the involvement of the Albanian mafia in the influence of high-ranking people in Ecuador is being investigated, has stated that she has been threatened recently.

She said that she was threatened with death by the Albanian mafia during this weekend, to stop the investigations that the commission chaired by her is doing on the connection of Albanians in Ecuador with the brother-in-law of the country's president.

Velos gave the news during a virtual session of the commission that was held for the questioning of administrative-financial coordinator Giovanni Ponce, fiscal agent Ruben Balda and police officer Jose Luis Erazo, who did not appear at the meeting.

The deputy showed a photo on her cellphone revealing that on Sunday in her councilor's car, the Albanian mafia had left a note that translates to 'dead' in Spanish. She said she had also received threatening messages on Instagram.

"Death threats and that they will make an attempt on the lives of my parents and my family if I do not stop the investigation of the Encuentro case and the investigation of the big report. In fact, within that message they also sent me instructions on how to follow it", said the deputy.

“Sigurisht që deputeti ka qenë lajmëtari i mafies, sepse menjëherë të dielën në makinën e këshilltarit tim kishte disa karta me këto logo të mafias shqiptare”, tha deputetja e UNES-it dhe tregoi se do të dorëzojë në Prokurori emrin e parlamentari që bëri komentin.

Veloz emphasized that he made his case public because the lives of other members of the investigative commission could be threatened. And in addition, she said that the investigative commission will continue with the planned investigations.

On February 17, Ecuador was engulfed in popular protests demanding the resignation of President Guillermo Lasso. As reported, the popular revolts erupted after the publication of the wiretapping which proved the connection of his ministers with members of the Albanian mafia. 

The scandal about this case broke out after the journalists of La Posta discovered that Rubén Chérrez, a person with strong ties to the Albanian mafia, had contacts with Danilo Carrera who appeared as the "Great Godfather" who made decisions on public contracts without being an official of the administration of headed by his brother-in-law, Guillermo Lasso.
