Donald Trump threatens to withdraw US troops from Europe

United States President Donald Trump has renewed his demand for the US to take control of Greenland, while warning that he may withdraw American troops from Europe if allies continue to fail to meet their obligations within NATO.

Arriving at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump criticized European countries for their level of defense spending and said the US has borne the main burden of the alliance's security for many years.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the positions of some allies regarding the conflict between Israel and Iran, stating that NATO had not sufficiently supported Washington during the escalation of tensions.

Trump also revived the debate over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and part of the Danish Kingdom, arguing that the island is of great strategic importance to the US.

"Greenland should be controlled by the US, not Denmark," he declared, adding that the area is surrounded by the naval activity of Russia and China.

The US president warned that the US may review its military presence in Europe.

"We don't have to spend any more money. We can pull all our troops out of Europe," Trump said, also criticizing European policies on immigration and energy.

His statements caused immediate reactions. British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves stressed that the future of Greenland should be decided by the people of Greenland and Denmark themselves, not by the American president.

Trump also repeated criticism of NATO member countries for failing to meet military spending targets, arguing that European allies rely too heavily on the US for their security.

His statements come at a time when NATO leaders are gathering in Ankara to discuss Euro-Atlantic security, the war in Ukraine and strengthening the alliance's defense capabilities.
