'We will send Serbian forces to Kosovo', KFOR confirms that it has

NATO-led peacekeeping forces in Kosovo said on Friday that they have received a letter from Serbia, which requests the return of a number of members of its security forces to Kosovo.

" Currently the letter is being reviewed " , says a response from KFOR in which it is underlined that this force "continues to be extremely vigilant and fully prepared to fulfill the mandate given by the United Nations."

This announcement was made a few hours after the Serbian Minister of Defense, Milosh Vucevic, told the Serbian media that the request for the return of a number of Serbian security forces to Kosovo has been officially submitted to the KFOR forces.

The Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, said on Thursday that the return of " several hundred, up to a thousand Serbian security forces in Kosovo " will be requested, although he expressed his belief that KFOR will not accept this request.

Belgrade refers to Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council, from 1999, which provided for the return of a number of Yugoslav military and police personnel to perform certain functions such as "liaising with the international civilian mission and the international security presence; marking/clearing minefields; maintaining a presence near Serbian heritage sites; maintaining a presence at the main border crossings".

At that time, Kosovo was considered part of what was left of the former Yugoslavia. Nine years after the adoption of Resolution 1244, Kosovo declared its independence, which is recognized by the main Western countries, but opposed by Serbia and its ally Russia.

The resolution also defined the mandate of the NATO peacekeeping forces that take care of the security of Kosovo, which did not give more details on Friday about the Serbian request that followed the recent tensions in the north of Kosovo, where for the seventh day in a row groups of Serbian citizens they continue to keep the main roads blocked.

NATO-led peacekeeping forces in Kosovo said they are closely monitoring the situation in northern Kosovo and that KFOR has full capabilities, and personnel, to provide a safe environment and freedom of movement for all communities. , anywhere in Kosovo, under his mandate based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999.

"It is clear that there are no democratic capacities either from one side or from the other. The two sides, Serbia and Kosovo, are using the (Kosovo) Serbs as a means of settling scores on situations that have not been resolved so far," said local Serbian politician Momcilo Trajkovic.

The authorities in Kosovo said that the situation in the north of the country continues to be unchanged and the roads are being blocked. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has said that he expects KFOR to unblock the roads in the north, while Western diplomats have said in recent days that they prefer diplomatic ways to resolve the situation in the north, and the blockades should be removed by those who set them up. .
