Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has issued a strong warning to European countries regarding their increasing military spending and dependence on US defense. In a recent interview, Villepin stressed that without protecting sovereignty and building an independent defense, the calculations of EU countries are “cynical and uncertain.”
Villepin's statements come as he has formalized his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election and announced the creation of a new political party, "La France humaniste." At the same time, he has published his new book, "Le Pouvoir de dire non," a reference to his historic stance against the US war in Iraq in 2003.
Kiss diplomacy has failed
Villepin criticized the approach of some Western leaders to global leaders, calling it “kiss diplomacy.” According to him, “even the most vain leaders tire of servile gestures,” adding that “Europe must stop petting the great powers and defend its values.”
Trump seeks easy victories, but is setting a dangerous precedent
Regarding the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, the former French prime minister said that US President Donald Trump has "been drawn into a campaign that Netanyahu presented as an easy victory," considering the intervention as hasty and potentially dangerous.
"Trump and his allies, like JD Vance, are afraid of what happened in Iraq. They want this to be considered the exception. But the problem is that this exception is becoming the rule," Villepin declared.
Bombings in Iran, "illegal"
Referring to the US bombing of Iran, Villepin called it a “preventive, unilateral and illegal war.” He added that “international law is a guarantee for all” and warned that the West’s double standard, condemning Russian aggression but remaining silent on Gaza, is “unacceptable.”
"Irresponsible statement" from the German Chancellor
Villepin also commented on the German Chancellor's statement that Israel is "doing the dirty work for the West." He described this as an "extremely heavy word" that "justifies military intervention for opportunistic reasons."
He added: "We still don't know the real consequences of the attacks on Iran. Where are the 400 kilograms of enriched uranium? International inspection and cooperation must be restored."
Against the blind increase in military spending
Villepin sharply criticized the idea that increasing military spending in NATO would only serve to purchase American weapons.
"Look at Denmark: American F-35 jets can be blocked by an order from Washington. If we do not build a sovereign and independent European defense, we will have lost," he said.
"The Atlantic Alliance no longer has internal trust"
For the former French Prime Minister, NATO's Article 5, which guarantees mutual defense, has been seriously questioned by Donald Trump. Villepin said that we are in a new era, where cyber threats, disinformation and populism have significantly weakened the strategic unity of European countries.
Putin benefits, Zelensky remains lonely
Analyzing global developments, Villepin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has emerged stronger from American involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict. "He is no longer isolated. He feels legitimized. Whereas President Zelensky is much more alone and the war in Ukraine has taken a back seat."
The danger of the far right is real – that's why I'm back
In the end, Dominique de Villepin confirmed his political ambition, arguing that “the historical moment demands it.” He described the rise of the populist Rassemblement National party as alarming, but said that the far right cannot be fought by chasing it from behind.
"Solutions exist. We do not lack content, but coherence, unity and vision," Villepin concluded.
