Brutal punishment in Indonesia, couple whipped 140 times for having sex outside

A brutal punishment has been carried out in Indonesia. A couple has been caned 140 times for having sex outside of marriage and drinking alcohol.

The punishment was handed down for violating sharia, or Islamic religious law. The 21-year-old woman lost consciousness after what authorities called a record number of lashes inflicted during a public flogging session in Aceh province.

Three female officers took turns hitting her with a rattan cane as she cried. After she collapsed, she was carried by female officers from the scene to an ambulance.

The couple were beaten with sticks along with four others, including an officer from the Islamic police force, who were found guilty of violating Sharia.
