Bulgaria goes to early elections again, the eighth in 5 years

President Iliana Yotova announced that Bulgaria will hold early parliamentary elections on April 19.

Yotova tasked Bulgarian National Bank Deputy Governor Andrei Gurov with forming a caretaker government and preparing for new parliamentary elections, the country's eighth in just five years.

The previous government resigned on December 11 after weeks of street protests over its economic policies and perceived failure to crack down on corruption.

At a press conference on Monday after meeting with Gurov, who introduced the members of his interim government, Yotova said she would sign a decree to hold elections on April 19.

Bulgaria, which joined the eurozone on January 1, has faced prolonged political instability, with parties failing to form a stable governing coalition in a fragmented parliament.
