German fighter jets could carry British and French nuclear weapons, Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested on Wednesday, following his latest push for a European nuclear defence.
European countries like Germany are starting to look beyond the US for nuclear defense. Merz recently revealed that he is in discussions with other European powers – in particular France – about creating a nuclear deterrent system across Europe.
While a German nuclear arsenal is out of the question for Merz, German fighter jets could carry American nuclear weapons and "it would be possible that this would also apply to British and French nuclear weapons," he said on the German podcast Machtwechsel.
For decades, Europe's security has depended largely on Washington's willingness to intervene in a potential conflict. The US nuclear arsenal plays an unparalleled role in creating this deterrence.
However, the re-election of US President Donald Trump – and the US president’s disparaging comments regarding the NATO alliance and threats to annex Greenland – have cast doubt on the continued sustainability of this dynamic.
New START, a bilateral agreement limiting the strategic nuclear arsenals of Russia and America, officially expired in early February, with little effort from either side to renew the terms.
Merz said France has offered to include Germany in its nuclear deterrence in the past and he believes such an offer "cannot simply be left unconsidered in these times."
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who has managed to maintain a productive relationship with Trump, told the Munich Security Conference that no one in Europe was pushing to replace the United States' nuclear umbrella.
Instead, the current discussion should be seen as an addition to strengthen the current framework.
Currently, Germany's aging Tornado jets are capable of carrying American nuclear weapons.
However, these aircraft will be replaced by 35 US-made F-35 aircraft that Germany ordered in 2022.
