BMW is recalling more than 720,000 vehicles because of a problem with the water pump electrical connector that could lead to a fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall involves certain X1, X3 and X5 vehicles as well as several other models.
Affected vehicles have inadequately sealed water pumps, according to the NHTSA report, and may be susceptible to fluid entering the electrical plug connector over time.
There is a possibility that a short circuit may occur, and there is a possibility of a fire, in rare cases.
Water pumps and plug connectors will be inspected and replaced as necessary. A shield will also be installed to divert any fluid that may fall into the pump from the intake air housing of the positive crankcase ventilation system, the report said.
Vehicle owners are expected to receive a recall notice in October. They will be instructed to take their cars to an authorized BMW center to carry out the appropriate remedies free of charge.
