Biden was optimistic about the cease-fire in Gaza, Hamas denies progress in

Hamas has described suggestions of progress on an Israel-Gaza ceasefire deal as an illusion, after US President Joe Biden said he was feeling "optimistic".

After two days of US-backed talks in Qatar, Biden said Friday "we are closer than ever."

However, a senior Hamas official told the BBC that there had been no progress and the mediators were "selling illusions".

Israel said it "appreciates the efforts of the US and mediators to convince Hamas of its rejection of a deal to release the hostages."

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack in southern Israel on October 7, during which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.
