Biden meets President Xi Jinping in California: US-China competition should not
American President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping

American President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met this Wednesday at the historic Filoli complex in San Francisco for nearly four hours to discuss a wide range of bilateral and global issues. The meeting takes place in the framework of the high-level meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, APEC.

Biden said it is essential that he and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have an honest understanding of each other as they head into the summit in California.

"I think it's paramount that you and I understand each other clearly from leader to leader, without misunderstanding or miscommunication," Biden told Xi as the summit unfolded.

Biden said the competition between the US and China could not be tipped towards conflict and added that his past meetings with Xi had been "frank, direct and helpful".

"As always, there is no substitute for face-to-face discussions. I have always found our discussions to be direct and honest," Biden said.

Biden said leaders had a responsibility to their populations to work together, including on issues of climate change, countering narcotics trafficking and the approach of artificial intelligence.
