France issues arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad
Bashar al-Assad

France today issued an international arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, whom it accuses of engaging in crimes against humanity over the 2013 chemical weapons attack.

The news was announced through AFP, from a source from the French judiciary and prosecutors.

The source also told the French agency that Assad is also suspected of involvement in war crimes over those attacks, which the Syrian opposition accused his government of, and in which more than 1,400 people died near Damascus in August 2013.

International arrest warrants are said to have been issued for the arrest of Assad's brother Maher, who is the de facto commander of an elite unit of the Syrian army, as well as two generals of the country's armed forces.
