A Ukrainian Air Force F-16 fighter jet has scored its first air-to-air victory, shooting down a Russian fighter jet, the chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, confirmed during a hearing in the US Senate.
"We recently saw the first air-to-air confrontation, in which a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter jet," Caine declared.
The American general did not disclose the type of Russian aircraft, the location or the exact date of the incident, but linked this success to the strengthening of Ukraine's air defense system.
"Over the past few years, with the support of many partners, Ukraine has significantly strengthened its multi-layered air defense system," he said.
According to the Ukrainian portal Militaryni, the downed aircraft is believed to have been a Russian Su-35, lost on July 8, 2026.
At the time, pro-war Russian Telegram channels acknowledged the loss of the plane, claiming it had been shot down as a result of actions by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The pilot reportedly survived and was rescued.
Later, Kremlin-backed media claimed that the plane was shot down by a US Patriot system after it became distracted during a confrontation with Ukrainian aircraft. However, no evidence was presented to support this version.
This development marks a new phase in the use of F-16 aircraft by Ukraine. Until now, these aircraft were mainly engaged in intercepting Russian missiles and drones, as well as precision strikes on ground targets.
Ukraine is expected to receive around 100 F-16 aircraft, donated mainly by Norway, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands.
