Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to end border clashes that have left dozens dead, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said after a meeting between the two countries' leaders in Kuala Lumpur.
According to the joint statement read by Anwar, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai have agreed that the ceasefire will take effect from midnight on July 28.
"Both sides have reached a common understanding to take concrete steps towards normalizing the situation," Anwar Ibrahim said during the media statement.
The decision comes after the involvement of US President Donald Trump, who had warned that continued fighting between the two countries would damage the chances of a trade deal with the United States. Trump made his intervention public on his social network “Truth Social” on Saturday, where he said he had communicated with the leaders of both countries and urged them to sit down for negotiations.
Despite the agreement on a ceasefire, armed clashes have still been reported in border areas during the talks, according to military sources from both sides.
