Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe, Knaus: Germany and France

Berlin's support for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe should not be taken for granted: Gerald Knaus, from the European Initiative for Stability, says that some countries, including Germany, are preparing to block the vote scheduled for later this month on the accession of Kosovo in CoE.

Through a post on X, Knaus explains that the countries in question are getting ready to act contrary to the recommendation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, according to which Kosovo has met the criteria to be part of the organization.

Germany has already implied that the condition for Kosovo's admission to the oldest European institution where the rule of law and human rights are measured is the creation of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority. As for France, it seems that there are other interests at play.

"Currently, some governments of the member states of the Council of Europe, including that of Germany and France, are preparing to block a vote in May on the admission of Kosovo, ignoring the recommendation of the Parliamentary Assembly given in April. This follows a campaign by the president of Serbia, Aleksandat Vucic, including his personal appeal to the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, not to allow the vote - and a commitment by Serbia to buy 12 French Rafale fighter jets," Gerald Knaus said. from the European Initiative for Stability.

The Parliamentary Assembly voted on April 16 in favor of the report recommending Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe. The issue is now in the hands of the Foreign Ministers of the Council of Europe, who must finally decide whether Kosovo will become the newest member of this organization. One of the direct benefits of Kosovo's citizens from eventual membership in the Council of Europe would be access to the European Court of Human Rights.
