Man arrested in US, accused of planting bombs at Capitol protest

US authorities have arrested a man suspected of planting bombs in Washington the evening before the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, an event perpetrated by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, two officials familiar with the investigation said.

The FBI previously released surveillance footage and offered a $500,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the perpetrator, having received hundreds of tips during the nearly five-year search.

The video, dated January 5, 2021, shows a person placing an explosive device near the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, while another bomb was placed near the headquarters of the Republican Party. Both facilities are located near the Capitol building.

The suspect was arrested in Virginia, according to a law enforcement official, and is expected to make his first court appearance in Washington.

The bombs were discovered the same day that pro-Trump protesters attacked Congress in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. The devices were deactivated in time and none exploded.

During the riots of January 6, 2021, protesters broke police cordons, attacked about 140 officers, and caused damage estimated at over $2.8 million.

According to reports, when Donald Trump returned to office in January, he pardoned almost all of the people accused of participating in those events, around 1,500 individuals.
