AfD spies for Russia? German minister's strong accusation: In the last 12

If the accusation is serious, the suspicion is not light. The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party may be carrying out espionage activities in Germany on behalf of Russia. This was stated by the Interior Minister of the state of Thuringia, Georg Maier, in an interview with the business newspaper Handelsblatt on Wednesday.

"For some time now, we have been observing with growing concern that the AfD is abusing the right of parliamentary interpellation to systematically investigate our critical infrastructure," Maier said.

According to him, over the last 12 months, the far-right party has submitted 47 interpellations, with increasing intensity and demanding more and more details.

"Even at the federal level, there are many interpellations of this type," the minister added, referring to infrastructure in the transport, water supply and energy sectors.

According to Marc Henrichmann, president of the parliamentary body for overseeing the secret services and a member of the CDU, "Russia openly exercises its influence within Parliament, especially through the AfD, to spy and obtain sensitive information."

The Thuringian government representative stressed that the AfD shows a particular interest in IT systems and police equipment, for example in the field of protection against drones. The former president of this body, Konstantin von Notz from the Green Party, shares the same opinion with his colleagues. "The AfD is damaging our country, it is consciously becoming a mouthpiece for the dictators of the world and spreading their narratives in the public debate and in our parliaments."

The AfD's ties to the Russian government are well-known and long-standing. Far-right MPs have made numerous trips to Russia, and many of these connections have been publicly documented. The current concern is related to a new planned trip to Moscow by Markus Frohnmaier, deputy chairman of the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

The secretary general of the CSU (the CDU's sister party in Bavaria) has urged AfD leaders to abandon the trip. Frohnmaier has rejected accusations of treason, assuring that he is "exclusively committed to the interests of Germany."
