US authorities have solved a murder that took place on Long Island 40 years ago. It concerns the murder of Teresa Fusco, the 16-year-old who was raped, beaten and drowned in 1984.
Three young men were arrested for the crime in 1986 and spent 18 years in prison until 2003, although they were innocent.
Long Island authorities have now moved forward with the investigation into the incident, where Teresa Fusco was found dead on December 5, 1984, 20 days after she disappeared near an ice skating rink in the town of Lynbrook.
Nassau County authorities arrested 63-year-old Richard Bilodeau, who owned a coffee shop at the time, as the perpetrator. The crime was solved thanks to a tip and DNA tests. Bilodeau, who had been under surveillance by authorities for a long time, was arrested after he bought a drink near his home last February and then threw the plastic cup in the trash, where police found it.

As the prosecutor who announced the 63-year-old's arrest explained, "the DNA from the glass matched the sample taken from Teresa's body." That glass convinced authorities that this time they had put the right person in jail, since in 2003 they had arrested three young men - John Restivo, Dennis Halstead and John Kogut - who, although convicted and serving 18 years in prison, were ultimately acquitted of the charges after special DNA tests.
The three then filed a lawsuit and won $43 million in damages.
The suspect identified as 63-year-old Richard Bilodeau was arraigned in court and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Fusco's killing after being indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office announced. https://t.co/Oo0mzRqEfT pic.twitter.com/2xk2alNDot

"I never lost hope. I always had faith in the system. For me, hearing that someone who killed my daughter was stopped will bring relief to me and my family. For this final result I am very grateful. Very grateful," said the father of the unfortunate 16-year-old, Thomas Fusco.
