Tens of thousands of Americans have gathered in Arizona, USA, for a memorial service in Lombar for conservative activist Charlie Kirk. US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance will also be present and will speak at the event. Other officials will also be present, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy Jr.

Police said more than 200,000 people could attend the ceremony.

Authorities have increased security to the same level as the Super Bowl.

Such ceremonies have not escaped criticism either.

Live ceremony:

"I think this is just the typical authoritarian model. They are taking a terrible crime, the terrible murder of Charlie Kirk, and trying to use it to attack their political opponents," former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

In times like these, "leaders should be trying to bring people together, but instead we are seeing greater divisions," the Democrat said, calling the suspension of Kimmel's show "a very clear example" of state censorship.

On the other hand, Trump has made accusations against Democrats. "It's terrible" that 58 Democratic lawmakers voted against the House resolution honoring Charlie Kirk, the White House chief of staff said, calling liberals "unbalanced and sick."

The killing of Kirk - a highly polarising figure - has put the US at a dangerous crossroads, writes the BBC's Katty Kay. Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a university event in Utah on September 10. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested in his murder.
