King Zog's marriage to Geraldine in April 1938 was one of the most sensational events on the eve of the Italian invasion of Albania. The wedding started on April 29, with a reception that King Zog and his wife gave to the diplomatic corps, guests and foreign journalists who had arrived in Tirana. The few hotels in Tirana barely managed to accommodate the many guests who came from all over the world. The event was widely covered in the foreign press thanks to 79 foreign photographers and journalists who had come to Tirana. The main attention was given to the gifts given to the newly married royal couple. Hungary donated a pajton with two Lipizzan horses, France a Sevres porcelain service, Mussolini some vases that once belonged to Napoleon, and King Victor Emmanuel III an antique bronze statue.

The most striking gift was that of the Chancellor of Germany, Hitler, a red sports Mercedes cabriolet, Type C540 K with supercharger.

This car, which was among the most expensive and unique of the time, was the pride of the German automobile industry. Of course, in such a case, something special, the best, what distinguished German industrial development had to be given. Hitler had previously given the same gift to King Farouk of Egypt.

Below we are publishing the letter that Hitler sent to King Zog for the delivery of the car on April 19, 1939, as well as King Zog's thank you letter sent to Hitler on May 9, 1938. At the end of the letter, Zog writes: "With great joy I take the opportunity to I also express my heartiest wishes for your health and for a beautiful and magnificent future for the people and the German Reich, which I hold dear..."

Your Majesty,

I am honored to, through my Minister in Tirana, present to you the wedding present - of which I have informed you -, the newest automobile of the Daimler-Benz factory, an 8-cylinder, sporty Mercedes, cabriolet, Type C540 K with compressor. I gave the task to the director of the factory. Mr. Jakob Werlin, to personally deliver the car to you. I should be very happy if the car pleases your majesty.

I take this opportunity to once again convey my warmest congratulations to your Majesty and the royal family...".

While King Zog on May 9, 1938 replied:

"Your Excellency,

His Excellency, the German minister and director of the Daimler-Benz factory, Mr. Jakob Werlin, they handed over to me in your name the beautiful sports Mercedes convertible, which Your Excellency was kind enough to give me on the occasion of my marriage. It is a special honor for me, Your Excellency, to convey to you my heartiest thanks for this wonderful gift and at the same time to congratulate you, the true creator of the new German development, while this automobile is a test clear of the achievements of the German automotive industry.

The words and warm wishes that Your Excellency had chosen for me and my family have touched me deeply.

It is with great joy that I take this opportunity to express to you my heartiest wishes for your health and for a beautiful and magnificent future for the people and the German Reich, which I hold dear..."
