The U.S. Treasury Department is considering a plan to mint new $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump as part of an initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America's founding, FOX Business has learned.

"Despite the forced shutdown of government by the radical left, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our country is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever," a Treasury spokesperson told FOX Business .

"Although the final design of the commemorative coin has not yet been chosen, this first draft well reflects the spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of great obstacles. We will share more details soon," he continued.

The image on the coin is thought to be this: Trump in front of the American flag, with a raised fist, and resembles the widely circulated photo from last year's assassination in Pennsylvania, when Trump was slightly injured in the ear.

The Treasury Department has the legal authority to mint commemorative $1 coins, including for special occasions such as the 250th anniversary of US independence.

The two most recent commemorative coins minted by the United States were the Harriet Tubman coin and the Greatest Generation coin, released in 2024.

The best-selling commemorative coin of all time remains the 1986 Statue of Liberty, with nearly 15.5 million coins sold.

The last commemorative coin program to surpass 1 million copies sold was the 1995-1996 one for the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Games, when Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympics. Over 2.4 million coins were sold from this series.

Meanwhile, the half-dollar coin for the 250th anniversary of George Washington, issued in 1982, had over 7.1 million copies sold. Also, the Olympic coins of 1983-1984 for the Los Angeles Games sold over 5 million pieces, while those of 1987 for the 200th anniversary of the US Constitution exceeded the 4 million sales figure.
