Albanian citizens seem to be moving more towards buying luxury vehicles, despite the extra taxes they have to pay. Official data from the General Directorate of Taxes, processed by SCAN TV, show that throughout the year 2023, citizens have paid nearly 1.8 million euros in taxes for the initial registration of luxury vehicles.
Compared to a year ago, an increase of 24.4 percent was registered, which also shows the increase in the number of luxury vehicles in the country, given that it is a fee that is paid only at the time of their registration.
On the other hand, the annual tax for luxury vehicles has increased by 9.6 percent, making luxury cost these individuals nearly 2.8 million euros.
A luxury vehicle is considered a vehicle up to 6+1, which meets at least one of the following conditions: Cylinder volume equal to or greater than 3000 cm3; or Value/price equal to or more than 5 million ALL.
The value of the vehicle is calculated as the value when the vehicle is registered for the first time or/and whenever its ownership changes. The value of the vehicle, as a result of the "Luxury Vehicle" classification, is reduced every year by 10% of the remaining value.
The luxury vehicle registration tax is 70,000 ALL and is paid at the time of registration. The annual tax for luxury vehicles is at the level of 21,000 ALL.
This year, the General Directorate of Taxes is undertaking a pilot project with the General Directorate of Road Transport Services of Albania to compare individuals who own luxury cars with their personal income declaration, (DIVA) as the first phase of this project and in the future to expand the exchange of information related to other assets of the taxpayer.
