Albania breaks energy consumption record as country faces drought

Electricity consumption in Albania has set a new record during the summer season, reaching 27,809 MWh on August 12, 2026, announced the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi.

According to data published by the minister, the consumption recorded on August 12 was about 5% higher than the previous record, set on August 13, 2025.

The increase becomes even more noticeable if we compare average consumption during the first days of August with the same period a year ago.

For the period 1-12 August 2026, the average daily consumption reached 25,787 MWh, resulting in about 22% higher compared to the average consumption during August 2025.

July and August recorded the highest consumption levels during this season, 26,488 MWh and 27,809 MWh, respectively.

The record demand for energy is also accompanied by difficulties on the ground. The situation has been aggravated by fires near substations and transmission lines, adding pressure on the energy system at a time of high consumption.

Faced with this situation, the Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Distribution System Operator (DSO) teams are continuing their work to guarantee network security and the continuity of electricity supply.
