Sejko: Government to support low-income groups

The state should continue to provide financial support to the low-income strata of society and to the sectors most exposed to the shock.

The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, said today that it is necessary for fiscal policies to support the most fragile and hit by the inflation wave.

However, according to him, this support should be financed by the additional income provided by the price increase and by the review of non-priority expenditures. In this way, the effectiveness of the intervention will not hurt the public debt indicators.

Sejko said that Russia's military attack on Ukraine has led to a galloping rise in commodity prices in world markets, raising the cost of living for households and increasing the production costs of businesses.

It is expected to bring higher inflation rates and slower economic growth in Albania compared to our estimates before the start of the war. However, according to Sejko, the positive trend of the country's economic development is expected to remain intact in the medium and long term.

Based on current information, the Bank of Albania expects the economy to continue to grow during 2022 and beyond.

The Governor said that the monetary policy of the Bank of Albania will continue to be guided by the observance of the primary objective of maintaining price stability and in this spirit decided to increase the key interest rate in March, bringing it back to the prepayment level of 1 %.
