The number of Albanians in the Balkans is reduced, but 2 million more live

In the last five years, the number of Albanians living in the countries of the Western Balkans has been significantly reduced. According to the data of national censuses in the Balkans held in the period 2021-2024, not only in Albania but also in other countries of the region where Albanians live, their number has been significantly reduced.

In total, 4.4 million Albanians live in the countries of the Western Balkans. According to the last census, 2.4 million of them live in Albania. So more than half live in the mother country.

1.5 million Albanians live in Kosovo, the second Albanian state in the region. Meanwhile, North Macedonia ranks third with 446,000 Albanians registered in the country, followed by Serbia with 61,000 Albanians and Montenegro, where 31,000 live.

Population decline in the Balkan countries is a phenomenon that has affected all countries. Among the main reasons is the high rate of immigration that has significantly reduced the populations of these countries. But this is not the only factor because the decline in birth rate is an erosive phenomenon for the population of all countries.

A total of 13.4 million inhabitants live in the five countries of the Western Balkans, which means that Albanians make up 32.8% of them.
