The draft law/Albanians, soon with digital ID

In addition to the physical identity card, Albanian citizens will have the opportunity to be provided with a digital identity card. The draft law for some changes in the electronic identity card has just been issued for public consultation, which foresees the device with a digital identity card, in order to improve and standardize the ways of identifying citizens in the digital environment.

In the context of digitization, modernization of electronic systems and the implementation of secure e-ID service schemes, these changes were proposed by the Ministry of the Interior, and in particular the joint-stock company IdentiTek, as the company that produces and distributes biometric documents for Albanian citizens or foreigners with temporary or permanent residence in Albania.

As a result of the process of aligning Albanian legislation with that of the European Union, the law on the electronic identity card of Albanian citizens will be amended in accordance with the EU regulatory framework. The latter implemented this year a new regulation on digital identity, creating the possibility of ensuring a high level of compliance of standards and security across member states, to facilitate movement and communication through digital platforms within the EU, as well as to strengthen the security and protection of personal data.

This draft law will fulfill the government's objectives in terms of digital identity, standardizing the identification of citizens at the European level and implementing a common digital identity, which can facilitate communication and cooperation with European institutions and businesses.
