Health tourism is falling, INSTAT: This year there was a decrease of 62.2%

While the number of tourists experienced a significant increase during the period January - November of this year, the situation for health tourism is different. According to data from the Institute of Statistics for this segment, a decrease of 62.2% was recorded during 11 months, in relation to the same period of 2022.

According to INSTAT, during the period January - November 2023, 895 foreign citizens entered our country for health treatments, from 2367 citizens who entered during the same period last year.

These figures are completely different, compared to the previous years when this type of tourism was always increasing. In fact, Albania has been seen as a country with high potential for the development of health tourism, which is done to benefit from health services in a place other than the patient's place of residence.

This is due to the low prices, but also the favorable geographical position for travelers from Europe. Initially, the interest was higher for dental services, while then an increase was also noted for other services, such as hair transplantation or cosmetic surgeries.

Meanwhile, the reasons for the decline of this tourism during 2023 are still unclear, as they may be related to the increase in prices for the required services, but also to the increase in the cost of living in many European countries, which affects consumer behavior.
