Israel and Iran, in a hot region such as the Middle East, have known together complex relations with such dramatic changes. Not to mention perhaps too fragile.
But the truth is that Israel and Iran were once good friends. It was 1947, when Iran along with Turkey, which is pretty much the rest of the Middle East, were the ones who voted against the creation of the state of Israel by the United Nations. These two states also rejected Israel's application to join the United Nations shortly thereafter.
In 1949. And from here both countries rushed to recognize Israel de facto, on an informal basis by first establishing secret trade relations.
But why would they have to do this? Because something moved in their mind?!
We, the non-Arab states, must be together, they said. Or had a greater power encouraged cooperation between early rivals in time and power?
Let's emphasize that Iran and Turkey are not Arab states. From 1956-1979 the Mossad Intelligence Agency network cooperated closely with its counterparts in Turkey and Iran. And this program was codenamed "Tripartite Alliance".
Jerusalem's ability to work so closely with Tehran and Ankara was also carefully considered one of the greatest achievements that Israel's foreign policy had ever known.
Alliance with the USA. Thus rivaling the reports in the region and beyond.
And this happened precisely when the country was governed by the first Crimean minister, David Ben Gurion. In 1950 he established bridges of cooperation between the two countries with the help of the great ally. Then in 1979, Islamists overthrew the Shah of Iran. They immediately resolutely adapted an anti-Zionist platform as the Tripartite Alliance fell apart.
And while Israel-Turkey relations have known ups and downs, the recent comments of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may have brought them to an all-time low.
October 7, 2023 also marked the date when Israel and Hamas engaged in a bloody war. Since then, the country that has been giving the Israeli and American leadership a lot of trouble seems to be clearly Iran.
In South Lebanon, Hezbollah fighters supported by Iran possess a large arsenal of rockets that largely dominate the rocket supply of Hamas, "confounding" not a little the famous air defense dome that Israel has. Because the real threat of Iran goes beyond Hezbollah.
Therefore, the Pentagon recently followed a different tactic. He sent the strike-ready aircraft carrier Eisenhower to the Middle East and other destroyers instead of their friends inside the region.
What was the main reason? Unofficial reports say that the US wanted to be there themselves. For one reason only; to first intercept missile and drone attacks by Houthi military groups in Yemen supported by Iran, and precisely those that target Israel.
Days later, US F-16 jets carried out airstrikes on the eastern side of Syria on some facilities used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps while its proxies in retaliation launched a barrage of missiles against US forces in Iraq and Syria.
What was expected to happen?
What is thought. Iran could not surrender. Not only that, it started from last night which was predicted to start soon but not as long and as wide.
But in the end there is still a big difference between clashes with Iran's authoritarian forces and an all-out US-Israel-Iran war. And given Iran's nuclear ambitions, this is something that certainly no one, not even the Ayatollah himself in Tehran, wants to see.
