"I got rich in Austria...", where is the economic logic of Samir
Samir Mane

In an interview published a few days ago in 'Opinion', one of the richest people in Albania shared with the public some details about how he got to where he is today. The discourse of his communication taught him a point: I got rich in Austria and I came to Albania with several million euros in my pocket to invest the wealth I made there. In fact, if you listened to the interview, you would understand that Mane was not enriched by the Austrians, but by the Albanians. He himself confessed that he started the trade by buying cheap televisions in Austria and then sold them to Albanians 3-4 times more expensive. Then he came to Albania and his income has only multiplied.

Mane described himself as a man born to do business, which he had tried when he was a student in Tirana. This sentence creates the image that he is good in this field and with a sense of smell. This conclusion seems contradictory if I put it in front of another sentence he said later: he sold the Bulqiza mine because he was not able to follow the conjectures of the international markets. So when a market's prices are driven by the stock market, where everything is transparent, free and knowledge is required, it's not very neat.

Where has Mr. Samir Mane been? In countries with captive markets. Most of his trade is in Albania, the region and the countries of origin. He said that more than half of his group's revenue is generated in Albania.

He is building a residence in the US and he was showing it as a place with no problems getting a building permit. Yes, America is a country that has economic freedoms that we do not have. But the state doesn't give you free land there, so Samiri chose Albania before the USA. There, the state does not allow you to have a bank, to be a builder, to give loans with the bank for the apartments you sell in the air. Everyone closes their eyes here, the minister, the central bank, the inspectorate, everyone.

He said that he had chosen not to be part of public tenders, but this is not entirely true. His company has become a shareholder in several projects after other firms won the competition. But the tenders do not have what they need as long as they build where no one can do it and the state takes the road, the airport, the energy network and they sell at prices that crush the competition.

Although the richest man and with the largest group in Albania, 755 million euros of income for 2021, the budget for charity is 2 million euros. Only 0.26% of revenue, when the standard for implementing the corporate responsibility policy is over 2%.

In the end, he called for young people not to be swayed by the idea of getting rich quick through illegal means, as it was enough to read the statistics that say "that 98% of those who have tried these ways have ended badly". The point is that those who got rich and were not caught, who knows what percentage they are? The police or any court that has not convicted them? Not that the call is wrong, but I am surprised that conspiracy theories convince the man who should be among the wisest in the theories of applied economics.

But apparently his wealth is not related to the theory, but to the creation of an enrichment scheme built on the logic of monopolies and the destruction of competition.

I would not have written these lines if there had not been an attempt to propagate the idea that "I got rich in Austria, I came to invest in Albania, and now that I have become very big I am going to America". The opposite is true: he got rich in Albania and he is taking the money he made here abroad!
