The largest Neolithic settlement in Albania is discovered in the Tepelenë-Memaliaj area

The Academy of Albanological Studies announced that the first campaign of the Albanian-Italian archaeological project "Landscape archeology in the Tepelen-Memalia area", led by professors C. Silvio Fioriello ("Aldo Moro" University of Bari), Eduard Shehi and Sabina Veseli (Institute of Archeology - Academy of Albanological Studies).

The studied territory coincides with a wide space, located in the village of Qesarat. Data on finds of archaeological interest in this territory are evidenced since the middle of the 20th century, as well as from the rescue archaeological excavations, carried out by Dr. Taulant Rama.

During the observations, about 70 ha were checked, 67 topographic units were recorded and about 20 sites were isolated, almost all of them multi-layered.

Previously reported findings:

– traces of a large and rich building, equipped with thermal facilities, related to the phases of its life in late antiquity, which was partially traced in 2017;

– an important site that has yielded extensive archaeological material, dating from the end of the Illyrian civil period to the Roman imperial period;

– a complex building from the Roman imperial period, probably a luxurious residence, located on a former farm of the end of the Illyrian civic period and equipped with an important sculptural collection and refined mosaic floors and wall paintings.

- two important settlements, probably created at the end of the Illyrian civil period and reused in the following centuries, until Late Antiquity.

But the most sensational discovery concerns a large area that has yielded a significant amount of prehistoric material, dating to the late Neolithic and throughout the Bronze Age. It may turn out to be the largest Neolithic settlement in all of Albania and perhaps in the southwestern Balkans.
