Vucic: Sanctions against Vulini are my responsibility
Aleksandar Vucic

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that the sanctions of the United States against the director of the Security and Information Agency (BIA), Aleksandar Vulin, are his responsibility "because I have not imposed sanctions on Russia".

"If we were to impose sanctions on Russia, they would not impose sanctions on Vulin. I'm saying what I was told, which is: impose sanctions on Russia and there will be no sanctions on anyone," Vučić told Pink TV on July 13.

He did not say whether Vulin will be replaced by the BIA leadership. Vucic stated that the sanctions have nothing to do with weapons or drugs.

"If they provide any valid evidence, we will prosecute Vulini. But there is nothing here, the situation with Russia is the problem", said Vucic.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Vulini on July 11. He is suspected of being involved in corrupt affairs and drug trafficking as well as ties to Russia.

Speaking about the possibility of imposing sanctions on Russia, Vučić said that Serbia has so far "resisted" taking this decision.

"I don't know if we will be able to continue to stay [without imposing sanctions on Russia]," Vucic said.

Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that has not yet sanctioned Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.

Why is Vulini sanctioned?

The US Department of the Treasury has said that Vulin was involved in corrupt affairs to "advance his political agendas and his personal interests at the expense of peace and stability in the Western Balkans".

According to the US, Vulin is involved in transatlantic organized crime, illegal narcotics operations and abuse of office. Vulinin is also accused of "advancing" corruption within Serbian governing institutions.

"He has used public positions to support Russia, to facilitate Russia's malign activity that degrades the security and stability of the Western Balkans, and provides Russia with a platform to further spread its influence in the region," the Department's statement said. American Treasury./REL
