The Prosecution Office at the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Elbasan has sent Sokol Mjacaj and 12 former officials of the Peqin prison for trial, in connection with the crime that occurred in this institution on December 15, 2023.

During the incident that afternoon, the convict, Arben Lleshi , lost his life, while another, Indrit Shaqja, was injured.

Then, the suspected perpetrator of the crime, Sokol Mjacaj , as well as the director of Peqin prison, Kamber Hoxha , appointed to this position in November 2023, as well as Qani Muça , the chief of the regime of the “ 41 biss ” building, Nikolin Gjonpalaj , the former chief of police of Peqin prison, Vilson Shima, chief of the regime of building B, Arben Dulellari , Information Specialist, Peqin IEVP operations room, Fatos Pire , service policeman, first floor sector manager, building B, Ilir Balla, service employee building B, Florenc Mile, service policeman at building B, Genci Muça , service in the column, building B, Indrit Dubali , basic role employee, building B, Klement Haka , basic role employee, building B and Erjon Çela , service policeman, building B at IEDP, Peqin .

Investigations have revealed that Sokol Mjacaj, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of two Czech tourists, committed the murder of Lleshi and injured another.

Mjacaj suspects that the weapon he used in this crime was brought into the prison several weeks before the incident.

Mjacaj admitted that he had a conflict with Lleshi, but the prosecution considers this only an alibi, seeing it as a contract killing.

The investigation also included suspicions that some prison officials may have collaborated with Mjacaj to introduce the weapon into the prison and to keep information about the incident secret.

The 12 prison officials, including director Kamber Hoxha and several heads of various regimes, are accused of "abuse of office" and failure to fulfill security duties, which may have contributed to enabling the commission of the crime inside Peqin prison.

Another important moment during the investigation of this very serious event was Mjacaj's refusal to cooperate with justice, which increased suspicions of a murder committed for hire.

For the crime that occurred in prison, Mjacaj has been charged with "murder under qualifying circumstances", "possession and production of weapons", and "introducing prohibited items into the institution for the execution of prison sentences".

This event caused a major reaction in public opinion and has raised concerns about security and control in Albanian prisons.
