The final moments of horror of a wife who was brutally beaten by her minister husband were played out today at the trial in the shocking case in Kazakhstan.

The footage shows astrologer Saltanat Nukenova , 31, being beaten and pulled by her hair by her husband, former economy minister Kuandyk Bischimbayev , in a restaurant owned by one of his relatives.

The footage was broadcast to the former Soviet republic's top court in a case that has shocked the public and prompted petitions for tougher sentences for domestic violence.

Bishimbayev, who faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, initially claimed the woman died of self-inflicted wounds on November 9.

But security camera footage proves otherwise as the politician is seen punching the defenseless woman for a long time.

This week, Bishimbayev admitted beating her and causing her death "unintentionally".

Recordings from two cameras showed the man beating his wife in a corridor and then continuing in the restaurant hall, where the woman falls to the ground but he grabs her by the hair and drags her.

Saltanat Nukenova was found dead from a head injury the next morning in one of the restaurant's VIP rooms, local media reported.

Bishimbayev, a father of four and former economy minister, was a close aide to former president Nursulan Nazarbayev, now 83.

Nukenova was Bischimbayev's third wife and the attack had come when she repeated her request for a separation.

Nukenova had complained earlier about violence and that she had tried to separate, according to the evidence presented in court.

Nukenova's older brother, Aitbek Amangeldy, told The Associated Press that he hoped his sister's tragic fate would change the mindset about domestic violence in the country.

"It's different when people can watch a person being tortured. Of course, it is difficult for me, especially to hear what the side of the accused says to defend himself, but I hope that these images are also educational material, both for lawyers and human rights defenders."
