Socialist councilors have proposed naming a street in the capital after Remzi Hoxha.
Born in Skopje, Remzi Hoxha had been a businessman and an activist for the ethnic Albanian cause in Kosovo, but had left for Albania to escape persecution by the Yugoslav regime. But then, on October 21, 1995, tragedy struck.
He was kidnapped in the center of Tirana by SHIK agents, when Sali Berisha was President. Although more than a quarter of a century has passed, the circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear.
His family and the media of that time directly accuse Sali Berisha of his disappearance. The media have published evidence that Remzi Hoxha received information that Sali Berisha would meet with Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, which would be seen as a betrayal of the Albanian cause.
The second incident was that Hoxha saw Bashkim Gazidede, the director of SHIK at the time, having lunch with Serbian paramilitary chief Zeljko Raznatovic, otherwise known as Arkani, in the Albanian city of Shkodra – which would also be seen as treason.
Also, the media have accused Sali Berisha of breaking the oil embargo against Serbia and arresting several KLA fighters, including Adem Jashari.
