Suffocated with a sheet in his cell in a ward of the Torre del Gallo prison, Aldo Latifaj, the 20-year-old Italian-Albanian prisoner, died despite the intervention of doctors.

The event happened on Wednesday evening around 20:00 in the Torre del Gallo prison, while the young man was still brought alive to the emergency room of the San Matteo hospital, but the doctors were unable to save the 20-year-old's life, which marks the sixth suicide within the last year in this penal institution.

The prison police officers have opened an investigation and sent an initial report to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Pavia, while an autopsy has been ordered which will clarify the causes of death.

The young man detained for crimes against property was left alone on Wednesday evening as the other two convicts were in other cells after using the social permit. The 20-year-old did not encounter any obstacles in performing the act, while he used a sheet which he passed around his neck, tightening it in order to block the airways.

So, it is reported that the prison officers noticed the young man lying on the floor and immediately opened the cell doors, calling the prison doctor who could not do anything for Latifaj, and asked for the help of the emergency services who arrived to intubate him, but to no avail as the young man later died in the hospital.
