Fighting drugs and their distribution, in cities like Tirana, is a mission that never ends. Whenever a group disbands, another takes its place. Young people aged 18-35 are easily catapulted. The reason is always fast money. As a consequence of the lack of labor market, low wages and high margin of luxury life, advertised on social networks.
In the times we live in, it is easier to find a person who starts working as a drug dealer, than a young person who leaves school banks to do an honest job with a normal salary. Over the years, the Albanian police have had to fight this phenomenon, which is growing and becoming more sophisticated, just like any other crime. In the last two years, the one we left behind and the one we are in, every month dozens of people have been attacked and arrested. And yet this was not enough to tame the rest.
The night before, Antidrug of Tirana, starting after arresting Enea Sulejmani and two other people a short time ago, and starting after consecutive arrests within the nationwide operation "Tempulli", put 20 other distributors in handcuffs operating in the capital. .
Seemingly a small figure, since we are used to arrests of hundreds of them. But basically we are dealing with a lack of fear of these people, that beyond the hit, they continue their activity, afraid of the force of the law.
Some take heart from the elasticity of the articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Albania. They know very well that after 72 hours, the court will release at least half of them. Describing their arrests sometimes as illegal and sometimes as a lack of evidence. Thus, the saga continues. They come out and pick up where they left off. Aware that they will end up in handcuffs again and they will come out again.
The biggest tragedy is that the police officers, taking risks, try to minimize this social gangrene, but the pronounced lack of cooperation demotivates them for the next operation. It is not even advisable to keep everyone in prison or detention, because even the latter would lead to high costs for the Albanian state. And yet, alternative, harsh punishments would increase credibility and reduce the number of people involved in such criminal activities.
