Knowledge of the changes that occur after death and the examination of corpses in the world and in our country, from a historical, ethical, forensic, legal point of view.

The deaths of Anita Bitri and four Russian tourists in Albania

Even in our country, there have been many cases of death from carbon monoxide, some of which I have encountered during my long-term practice of forensic medicine.

But what I remembered first was the death of the well-known Albanian singer, Anita Bitri, together with her mother and daughter, on October 19, 2004, in Staten Island, New York.

From the medico-legal and toxicological examinations, as well as the examination of the investigative data and the investigation of the scene, it was considered as a case that occurred due to the blockage of the carbon monoxide (CO) discharge pipe of the boiler of the heating system. heating, by the workers during the construction of a balcony, in the side part of the house where the victims lived.

As a result of this blockage, they were poisoned by the deadly carbon monoxide gas that had filled the interior of the house, from the boiler that the victim himself had lit the night before, to warm himself up, because the weather was very cold.

The case was considered accidental and was not accompanied by criminal prosecution of any person.

The case of the death of four Russian tourists in Albania

Yes, the most serious event of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning that happened in our country was undoubtedly the death of four Russian tourists, on October 15, 2021, in a hotel in the village of Qerret, in the district of Kavaja, for which, a month and a half later, in a telephone interview, during a TV show of the well-known journalist Klodiana Lala, I explained the forensic aspects of this tragic case, with four deaths.

This televised conversation, perhaps, was the reason that pushed me to examine more carefully all the circumstances, the investigative, toxicological, forensic data of these deaths, presented in the visual media and the press of our country, it also relied on my own experience and the rich relevant literature.

In order to complete these data as much as possible, I also met with the prosecutor, who also showed me the criminal file of this case, regarding its forensic aspects.

According to the prosecution file, it appears that; on 15.10.2021, at 22.10, the notification was received that in Qerret, Golem Kavajë, in the "Gloria Palace" Hotel, in the premises of the SPA, four people were found without signs of life, who turned out to be four Russian citizens: two their parents, daughter and son-in-law.

The itinerary of the movements until their death  was more or less this:

The victims have been accommodated in this hotel since October 10, 2021. After a few days of staying in the hotel, on October 15, 2021, they traveled to North Macedonia and at 10:07 a.m. they crossed the Thana Pass border; There they were fed and that same day, at 17.07, they entered Albania again, from the border point of Tushemishti. They stopped only in Librazhd, where they were fed again. At 8:00 p.m., they returned to the hotel where they had booked the SPA facilities the day before, and ordered some food to be taken to their rooms. They were found dead in the SPA premises by the hotel staff.

After the notification from the hotel, the investigative team, under the direction of the prosecutor, immediately inspected the scene. The corpses were found on the ground floor (floor 0) of the hotel building, where on the north side of this floor is the area of ​​the warm pool and the SPA. Located in an environment with dimensions of 22.2 -8.4 m., in the center of which there is a swimming pool, with dimensions of 11.5 x 6.5 m., with a volume of 60 m 3  of water.

At the north-western end of this environment, there is a sauna, which at the moment of inspection, results in work and on its dashboard, the electronic note reads 19.14 and the temperature is 63 degrees Celsius. Around the perimeter of the pool, there are rows of white plastic sunbeds.

In the north-eastern corner of the pool, next to the first lounger in the row, on the ground, is found lying in an orderly manner, the corpse of a male citizen, later identified as that of citizen SB

On the eastern side of the pool, in the middle of its length, two more corpses, one male and one female, identified as NB and NB, are found next to each other, and these two corpses are lying in a disordered state. On the western side of the pool, on the middle deckchair, the corpse of citizen E B is found lying and without any sign of life.

From the external examination of the corpses, no external bodily injuries (signs of violence) were observed in any of them.

Two mobile phones of the victims and the clothes used by them were taken from the area of ​​the scene as material evidence. Subsequently, two water samples, separated from each other, one for examination with a volume of 1000 ml, were taken from the pool water according to standard procedures for further laboratory examination. and one for storage, volume 100 ml.

Two samples of powder, apparently chlorine used to disinfect and treat pool water, were also taken for further examination; Chlorine samples were taken separately in the amount of 100 ml. each, one for analysis and the other for storage. Food products and their remains were also taken from the rooms where the victims were accommodated for further examination, in order to examine them.

The next day, on 16.10.2021, the autopsy of the four victims was performed. In their forensic examinations, the characteristic signs of asphyxiation deaths, as well as the light red color of the tissues, were observed in all four victims. These data are given in the relevant medico-legal acts, accompanied by toxicological analyses, which showed that their blood contained carbon monoxide, in the figures of 75-80%.

The medical-legal results of these four deaths were announced when more than a month had passed since the occurrence of this tragic event. So during the first month after these deaths, I suspected more of a chlorine poisoning, or its vapors, a food poisoning, or biological, etc.

A long time later, an investigative experiment was carried out under the same conditions as the incident, to determine whether the CO in the air was a result of the malfunctioning of the boiler in the hotel and the lack of a proper ventilation system, or due to others. By doing it, no result was achieved.

Precisely, in the interview given by me, in December 2021, I explained, among others:

Carbon monoxide (CO), revealed in the results of the expertise, is one of the most dangerous poisons and the moment it binds to hemoglobin, it becomes deadly. Their death happened because the problem in the boilers must be very serious, that all four died together. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas as heavy as air and is formed when there is combustion. It is considered one of the most dangerous and widespread poisons. It has the property of binding to the hemoglobin of the blood.

In cases where monoxide enters the body, through breathing, it binds to the hemoglobin of red blood cells, and this bond with it is 250 times stronger than that with oxygen. It depends on the amount of carbon monoxide gas in the place where the person is. Oxygen is replaced with this gas and the signs of poisoning appear, with headaches, dizziness. There is also a kind of euphoria, similar to intoxication. Then it goes to the second stage, where the person is unable to move, then falls into a coma and dies.

In the present case, the fact that these four victims found dead in the same environment, whose blood contained CO in very high quantities, accurately proves it; that their death came from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The victims in these deaths are presented with a light red color of their body, similar to that of a living person, as they were also found in this event.

When the employees entered, the environment was cleaned. Here is something that should be looked at carefully, the fact that these four died, shows that the possibility of a defect in the boiler is very high".

Indeed, the main reason, that I am again doing this rather detailed analysis of this case, is that this serious fatal event, when a long time has passed, still remains undiscovered, regarding the circumstances and the cause of this poisoning.

At the beginning, I want to emphasize the work of the expert team of the Institute of Medicine, of which I was also a part several years ago, which managed to accurately determine, as the cause of these four deaths: poisoning by CO (oxide of carbon).

In addition, I am citing foreign literature data, according to which deaths from CO poisoning, occurring in the closed environments of hotel swimming pools and saunas, have occurred in several cases in the USA, due to defects of the heating and ventilation equipment, of the closed environments of these pools.

But what are the flaws that may have had a negative impact on not fully clarifying this event in the village of Qerret i Kavaja?

- First, for this tragic case, it was thought immediately at the beginning, for deaths that occurred mainly from chlorine poisoning, or its vapors, food poisoning, or biological, etc. Thus, as far as I have been able to verify, from the data obtained by me at the Prosecutor's Office of Kavaja and those presented in the press, in the inspection of the scene, immediately after its occurrence, it does not appear that the installations were seen and checked, for heating of the hotel's indoor swimming pool and sauna: the heating boiler installed outside the hotel, with its pipes, ventilation system, etc.

- Secondly, there is an inexplicable delay, over a month, in announcing the full results of the autopsies of the victims, which also contain the corresponding toxicological examinations, for the discovery of the real cause of this serious poisoning, while the results of the toxicological examinations , of the death of the French writer Emil Zola, committed 120 years ago, have discovered and published this poisoning, very quickly, only 2-3 days after his death.

While in the case of the death of four Russian tourists, during this period of more than one month, poisoning by chlorine and its vapors was mainly sought. I am sorry to state the findings of these flaws, which have undoubtedly influenced the complete non-disclosure of this event, which may have occurred for various reasons.

I am announcing them because this is a serious case, with four human lives lost, for which forensic medicine, a science put at the service of the collective interest and social justice, together with the relevant bodies of justice, have the obligation , to clarify these deaths, in all their details. Unfortunately, for this tragic event, the Prosecutor's Office of our country has suspended further investigations./ Memorie.al
