The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania will have a new archbishop.
The Holy Synod will convene today, corresponding to the second Sunday of Lent, to elect the new Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, who will succeed the late Archbishop Anastasios.
The Holy Synod of the Church will convene after the Divine Liturgy, where the faithful will pray that the members of the synod will have the enlightenment to vote for the right person.
After the synod elects the new Archbishop, he will enter the Cathedral where, as is known, he will also give a public message. With the announcement of the name of the new Archbishop, bells will ring in all the cathedrals and churches of Albania.
Archbishop Anastasios rests in Albania in the Orthodox cathedral, and left in his will that his wish was to elect an Albanian cleric as head of the Church.
5 out of 7 members of the Holy Synod are Albanians. In the Metropolis of Korça, His Grace Joani; in the Metropolis of Berat, Vlora and Kanina, His Grace Asti; in the Metropolis of Apollonia and Fier, His Grace Nikolla; in the Metropolis of Elbasan, His Grace Andoni and the bishop of Kruja, His Grace Anastasi.
The other members of the Synod are the metropolitans of Amantia and Gjirokastra, Nathanaili and Dhimitri, who are Greek citizens, but who cannot be at the head of the Church because they do not meet the criterion of Albanian nationality according to the Statute approved in 2006.
The 7 members of the Synod will vote on Sunday for one of the Albanian metropolitans, with the most talked-about name being that of the oldest high priest, His Grace Joan of Korça, who immediately after the death of former Archbishop Anastasios was elected temporarily at the head of the Church.
Archbishop Anastasios Giannoulatos passed away at the age of 95 on January 25 in Athens. He led the Church for more than three decades and rebuilt the church destroyed by atheism.
