Seismologist Edmond Dushi has shown that the earthquake that occurred yesterday evening at 23:37 with a magnitude of 4.7 Richter or 5.5 was preceded by a series of aftershocks that began on the 12th and continued until yesterday.
According to the seismologist, it was followed by another moderate magnitude 3.9 which is the main aftershock, then continued until now with about 63 other aftershocks. Edmond Dushi says that there is a tendency that the aftershocks may continue in the following days.
"This earthquake was preceded by a series of foreshocks that started on the 12th and continued until yesterday morning where we had a slowdown or slowdown, and then it was followed by this shock. Immediately after the main shock, which we now call the main shock because there is no stronger shock above this magnitude. It was followed by another moderate magnitude 3.9 which is the main aftershock then continued until now about 63 aftershocks have been recorded. Of course there could be more , but that's the monitoring capacity that the current network covers," said Edmond Dushi in an interview for Klan News.
Are aftershocks expected again in the future, perhaps lighter than those observed overnight in your opinion?
Edmond Dushi: The tendency is, of course, the number of aftershocks is a function of the magnitude, that is, the accumulated energy, the main shock clearly states that it is a moderate earthquake, it is not an earthquake that is problematic, but that of course also depends on the tectonic or local conditions. This then favors the extension in time of the process, so that it can happen in a longer time. The tendency is that it will last, it may last several days sporadically.
Dushi has also given a message to all people in case they face an earthquake and shows how they should act.
"The message is not that they don't go out because it's natural, but they should take care in such a way as to avoid chaotic movements or eliminate risk elements in a building or a structure, especially tall structures, buildings of which have elevators, stairs without curbs. These are elements that can pose a risk because it is not the impact that happened, what happened is a few seconds and if you escape it you can easily get out, the problem is if there are strong aftershocks that can cause problems. So if the structure resists an earthquake, then it's the aftershocks that can cause increased problems in this aspect. They have to self-organize and keep calm."
