Albania joins NASA's Artemis agreements for space exploration

Albania will become the 73rd country to sign the Artemis Accords, an international initiative for cooperation in the peaceful and sustainable exploration of space. The signing ceremony will take place on September 21 at NASA headquarters in Washington.

The ceremony will be held at 12:00 noon Washington time at NASA headquarters. The country will be represented by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, and Albania's Ambassador to the United States, Ervin Bushati.

The ceremony will be hosted by NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson, in the presence of US State Department officials.

With the signing of the agreement, Albania will join a group of 72 states that have so far adhered to the Artemis Accords, created in 2020 by the United States and seven other founding countries.

What are Artemis Agreements?

The Artemis Agreements set out a set of practical principles for international cooperation in civil space exploration, particularly to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

The initiative aims to promote peaceful exploration of space, transparency and coordination between countries, and the implementation of responsible standards during space missions.

The agreements are based on the principles of the Outer Space Treaty, the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Space, and international agreements on the rescue and return of astronauts.

According to NASA, the Artemis Accords aim to create a common framework for countries and private companies developing missions and operations around the Moon.

Membership in the Artemis Agreements thus includes Albania in an international framework of cooperation for the exploration and civil use of space.

The Artemis Accords were created during the first administration of US President Donald Trump, in 2020, with the leadership of NASA and the US Department of State.
