The death toll from the train crash in Greece reaches 57

The death toll from the March 1 train crash in Greece has risen to 57, the BBC reports. A passenger train has collided with a freight train in northern Greece, leaving more than 100 others injured.

Greek Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis has resigned "out of respect for the people who died unjustly". He said he had made "every effort" to improve Greece's railway system, which he said was "not suitable for the 21st century".

Rescuers searched late Wednesday for survivors amid the wreckage of the trains in what is now considered the country's deadliest rail collision.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the collision between a passenger train and a freight train " a terrible rail accident without precedent in our country " and vowed a full and independent investigation. He said it appeared the crash was "largely due to tragic human error", but did not elaborate.

Greek authorities arrested the manager of the train station in the city of Larissa. They did not release the name of this person or the reason for the arrest, but the station master is responsible for rail traffic on that part of the tracks.

The train with about 350 passengers was traveling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki. Many of the travelers were students returning from carnival celebrations./ REL
