The mall burned down

Xezmi Metushi, the chief of the fire department in Lushnje, spoke about the fire that engulfed the shopping center yesterday, as a result of which 42 people asphyxiated and were hospitalized.

He told the media that they did not have the capacity to intervene in time.

He further explained that the first focus of the fire came from the fourth floor of a shoe store, then spread rapidly.

"We did not have the capacity to intervene in time. 10 residential apartments were in great danger yesterday, and 4 firefighters were injured," he said, among other things.

Everything started around 2:40 p.m., in the shopping center located between two residential apartment buildings. The flames first engulfed the second and third floors. It is still unclear what caused the flames, which quickly spread through the vents.

The rapid spread of the flames made the work of the local firefighters difficult, for whom it was initially impossible to locate the flames and who asked for help from Tirana and nearby cities.

Forces from the capital, but also Fieri and Patosi, went to their aid. The residents of the first floors were evacuated by all possible means, while it took the intervention of the RENEA forces to save the residents who remained on the upper floors.

The biggest damage was done to the shopping center, whose stores were burned on 2 floors, while the structure suffered major damage.
