Cases of "whooping cough" in children are increasing, pediatricians

Little ones are being affected the most by pertussis, or as it is otherwise known "whooping cough", which is currently registering increasing cases in the countries of the region and beyond.

This disease is contagious through saliva sprays and affects all ages, but mostly children and teenagers, regardless of whether you are vaccinated or not.

"We have a spread of pertussis or the disease called whooping cough. It usually affects small babies, who have not received the complete vaccine injection material, since they are also at home with their older brothers or sisters and at the same time members of community facilities or nurseries, kindergartens and schools," explains pediatrician Lori Gjoni.

The pediatrician of QSUT shows that in fact infectious diseases are circulating more often due to the decrease in vaccination.

"The disease has increased significantly thanks to the spread of some infectious diseases as a result of the lack of vaccination. We have noticed recently that we have a decrease in awareness on the part of parents about their children," says the doctor.

In the pediatric emergency room of QSUT, doctors are treating infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, which also suffer complications.

"They are then complicated by a virus, which turns into an infection and ear pain, goes down into the pharynx, tonsils and lower respiratory tract. We have also had complications of infections such as otitis, tracheitis or even bronchitis ," adds pediatrician Gjoni.

The emergency room handles not only outpatient visits from Tirana, but also cases of complications that are referred by district hospitals for hospitalization.
