Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting with 40 rectors of public and private universities in the country, where the focus was on the future of higher education and the need to review the current law.
During his speech, Rama said that the construction of a student complex is being planned in Tirana and Durrës, as a solution to the problem of high rents.
"There is a very great potential to create student accommodation infrastructure, considering the train that will be in operation soon, it will be very simple for students in Tirana to be accommodated on the Durrës campus, we will build a very good student complex to help students due to the high rents in Tirana and Durrës. We are at a new moment of change for higher education," said Rama.
He also emphasized that the time has come to reflect on the implementation of the law, taking into account the changes of the times and the experience created by years of practice.
According to the Prime Minister, the law on higher education, drafted in collaboration with the rectors themselves, needs corrections and not overturning.
He underlined that the review process will be carried out through a joint working group, where universities will have a key role thanks to their experience.
Rama explained that this process will not begin immediately in the next parliamentary session, but requires extensive organization and consultation.
"It is time to revisit the law on higher education, a sufficient period has passed to reflect on that law, the changes of time but also the findings of practice in the framework of the law. The current law, as you know, was written in collaboration with you, with your contribution. This will be the case again, I hope and believe that also due to experience, it is not about overturning, as in the case when the law was written, but it is about corrections. We will not wait for the next session of parliament, let's organize ourselves with a joint working group", said Rama.
Another important issue discussed was the internationalization of Albanian universities and their preparation for Albania's accession process to the European Union.
The Prime Minister noted that universities, especially the University of Tirana, have made important steps towards securing funding from European funds, increasing capacities beyond the state budget and creating new opportunities for lecturers and scientific research.
Rama emphasized that higher education is a strategic ally of the country's institutions on the path towards the EU and that the university system must become more competitive, more reliable and better prepared for the challenges ahead.
