Preferences for vacation destinations within the country change by quarter, but for at least half a year Korça remains the main choice.

INSTAT's data in the "Vacations and Travels" tourism survey for last year show that the southeastern city of the country is the main destination in the first and last quarter of the year. Durrës, on the other hand, is the favorite in the second quarter and Vlora in the third.

"If we analyze the trips made in Albania throughout the quarters distributed according to the purpose of 'Holidays and free time', it is noted that in the first quarter the main destination of the trips was the Korça region with 31.4%, while the trips that as the main destination, the district of Durrës registered the highest percentage of trips in the second quarter, 24.0%, and for the third quarter, the district of Vlora was registered as the preferred destination with 51.3%.

Even in the fourth quarter, trips with the main destination of the Korça region recorded the highest percentage of trips at 52.1% respectively. In 2021, the most preferred destinations for trips made outside Albania for 'Vacations and leisure' for the first quarter are: Montenegro, Kosovo, Turkey and Dubai, for the second quarter: North Macedonia and Turkey, in the third quarter: Greece, Turkey and Montenegro and for the fourth quarter: Turkey and Kosovo", says the INSTAT survey.

INSTAT estimates that in 2021, the number of trips for personal or business purposes (within or outside Albania) made by individuals living in Albania over the age of 15 was 3,459,499. "The average number of nights of stay for completed trips is 4.3 nights. Trips for personal purposes make up 97.1% of total trips, while trips for business purposes make up 2.9% of them. The highest concentrations of trips made were recorded in the months: August (18.6%), July (12.4%), June (11.5%) and December (9.9%)", the publication states.

Trips by purpose

The survey shows that in 2021, about 7.7% more trips were recorded throughout Albania and abroad, compared to 2020. In general, there was an increase for all types of trips, where the highest increase was recorded for trips for personal and business purposes outside Albania.

"In 2021, the trips made for the purpose of "Visit to relatives and friends" in Albania and abroad have increased by 2.9 and 8.6 percentage points, respectively, compared to 2020.

If we analyze the distribution of trips according to the duration of the nights of stay, short trips (1-3 nights) in Albania occupy a greater weight (70.0%) than long trips (4+ nights). The situation is different for trips made outside Albania, where the largest share of them is long trips (69.8%).

If we analyze in more detail the duration of trips according to the purpose in Albania and abroad, we notice that trips for "Vacations and leisure" have a short duration within the country (59.4%) and a long duration abroad (51, 7%). Trips for "Visit to relatives and friends" have short duration within the country (79.9%) and long duration abroad (83.2%). The trips made for business purposes have a short duration in Albania (98.7%) and a long one abroad (77.0%)", says the survey.

Traveler profile

"The analysis of trips by age group in 2021 shows us that the highest percentages of trips inside and outside Albania were made by the 25-34 age group. The analysis of trips according to the traveler's gender, in 2021, shows us that the highest percentages of trips inside and outside Albania were made by male travelers (52.0% and 57.7%).

Regarding the duration of trips analyzed according to the age group of travelers, in 2021, it is noted that trips with short duration (1-3 nights) have recorded the highest percentage for the 45-54 age group. While the trips with a long duration (4+ nights) were made by the age group of 75+ years old", INSTAT estimates, Monitor reports.
