Arben Ahmetaj

In Albania, the Special Prosecutor's Office has filed another charge of "Misuse of duty", against former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj, for another case related to the privatization of the former Bread Factory in Tirana. Mr. Ahmetaj, who is on the run, is suspected of having signed, in violation of the law, the sale of the factory as state property, while all levels of the judiciary had recognized the right of ownership to a capital family. At that time, Mr. Ahmetaj was the Minister of Finance, a position he held since February 2016.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the damage caused is estimated at millions of euros. A complex of buildings was then built on the site of the former factory. In this case, the investigations have included other former officials of the time in the Ministry of Finance.

A few days ago, sources from the Special Prosecutor's Office had warned that the investigations against former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj had registered "surprising developments", adding that it is about "new criminal facts and evidence".

Since July of this year, there is an international arrest warrant against the former deputy prime minister. He left the country on the same day that the Special Prosecutor's Office appealed to parliament to obtain authorization for his arrest. The name of Mr. Ahmetaj appeared during the investigations about the incinerators.

He is suspected of at least three criminal offenses from passive corruption to concealing or not declaring wealth, money laundering. The prosecutors have declared that they have discovered close ties between him and the two entrepreneurs who won the concessionary contracts for the construction of incinerators, which also, according to them, were behind some financial transactions carried out by Mr. Ahmetaj. Some of his real estate and bank accounts have been seized.

Mr. Ahmetaj rejected the accusations against him, claiming that he was never involved in the procedures that gave life to the incinerator project. He has made it clear that he has no intention of returning to the country, "before the truth comes out". /VOA
