A very humane interview was given by the Foreign Minister of Greece immediately after returning from the areas destroyed by the terrible earthquake in Turkey, during which he positions himself in low tones, while the human wisdom and sincere humane messages of Nikos Dendias to the diplomatic mantle of ordinary of a foreign ministry.
The Greek Foreign Minister is the first European minister to visit Turkey after the devastating earthquakes. Asked at the beginning of the interview, given yesterday evening for the Greek TV channel "Star" and journalist Mara Zaharea about his impressions from this visit, how he experienced the dramatic situation up close, the Greek minister summed it up in three words: "a tragedy" infinite".
"The city I visited, Hatay, because it is not the only city that has been affected, has suffered a crushing blow. Not only have most of the buildings either collapsed or tilted or have massive damage, but the entire infrastructure network, the airport, the roads, the electricity grid, the gas grid, everything has suffered massive damage. It is an extraordinary disaster, a sad situation" the Greek minister expressed very sadly, continuing the story about the survivors of the earthquake "The situation is very difficult because the temperature at night drops below zero, the survivors need a lot of help, for about 65,000 winter tents as soon as possible, for containers to accommodate the most delicate part of the population, there are no beds in hospitals, outpatient hospitals are needed. All this applies to Turkey and Syria,
Kilometer queue for the abandonment of the ruined cities
The Greek Minister has stated that Turkey will need many years to return the situation to normal since the two powerful earthquakes were too superficial, but it is not only the material damage, but first trust must be restored of residents. "People, the few residents I have contacted, are scared. Terrified, in tears, they mourned the loss of their people. The possibility of living in this space is currently being questioned. The line of cars leaving the area is kilometers long," said Nikos Dendias, adding that even the city of Adana, relatively less affected by the earthquake, has transformed into a ghost town, being constantly abandoned by thousands of residents.
Cavusoglu about the post-seismic tremors
Dendias has also referred to the seismic progress, stressing from the beginning that he is not a seismologist, but he is interested in having information from his counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, who has confirmed that the area has had 1600 post-seismic tremors. with an even above 6 on the Richter scale, adding that there is no way citizens will be convinced to continue staying in the area if they do not stop these tremors.
Greece continues to be close to Turkey
After sending the first aid contingents and special rescue forces, Greece will continue to be close to the Turkish people. Minister Nikos Dendias has specifically referred to this point "In Turkey, I transmitted the messages of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, that Greece will continue to help Turkey with all its strength, while we are part of the EU aid framework as well as the of the EU Civil Protection. It is normal that our Turkish and Syrian fellow citizens will have our continuous support," Dendias emphasized. While he added that, as he found during the visit, the Turkish government has done a lot of work in terms of the demands they will present, confirming that Greece will try to meet as many of the extraordinary needs as possible.
I ask for the coordination of a humanitarian network from the entire Greek society.
Minister Nikos Dendias has made an open proposal during his interview. "If you allow me, I would like to add something. Perhaps it would make sense for a co-Hellenic coordinated initiative, perhaps from the Greek media, with a clear objective of a high level of Greek solidarity towards our fellow Turkish citizens. Think of an electronic platform, for example. You know better, I just want to emphasize that apart from the government, the charitable foundations, it is necessary for the entire Greek society today to show full solidarity to our neighbors in the Aegean, at this extremely difficult moment.
Greek-Turkish relations at a new level
In the reports between the two countries and the photo of the warm embrace of the two ministers, the Greek journalist has stopped, as well as the different reaction of many Turkish media from the former rhetoric in favor of "night" attacks to the gratitude for the neighbor present to receive the relevant statement of Nikos Dendias : “ I'm settling for the human element at the moment, I think it's too early for anything else. Today we will keep alive the human element and the possibility that the peoples of two countries, two societies came much closer to each other. The very fact that it took the pain of a disaster for this to happen is perhaps a sign that no matter how serious the divergences or contradictions that any country in this world may have, the human suffering always exceeds them. Thus, it will always be possible to overcome any contradiction,
The hug with Cavusoglu, real and felt
Dendias has not hesitated to admit that the hug with the Turkish counterpart that has attracted the attention of the media all over the world was not made up, on the contrary "With Cavusoglu, the hug was primarily about what we feel two for each other, with this extraordinary tragedy as a background. But also with the fact that we have known each other for so many years", Dendias emphasized.
The new reality of relations and Erdogan
Nikos Dendias spoke about the "broken ice" between Greek Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis and Turkish President RTErdogan from May of last year: "I think we have a new climate in our relations at the moment. I will not make any comparison with the past, I do not have to compare either publications or behavior in relation to the past. A tragedy happened today. Greece will help Turkish society, Turkish people and Turkish citizens and Syrian citizens, all those affected by the tragedy as much as it can and all the people who were tested, to the extent it can.
The Turkish constitution does not allow postponing the May elections
Regarding the allusions to the postponement of the May elections in Turkey, Dendias said that "I do not believe that the constitution of Turkey allows the postponement of the announced date of the elections. Undoubtedly, there will be difficulties in the areas destroyed by the earthquake to express the will of the Turkish people, but I think that apart from that, the elections will be held at the appointed time.
The most powerful impressions of visiting Hatay, rescuers and puppies
Finally, Nikos Dendias talked about what left the most impression on him during this visit in the deep drama of the Turkish people. "I felt very proud that my patriots of the rescue forces saved people's lives. In total, European rescue forces pulled 205 people alive from the wreckage (*this number was how long I was there, maybe some more have been found). Some of the survivors took out the Greek forces and that made me very proud.
Finally, to be honest, I want to add that we also have a more silent contribution, our three rescue force puppies, who also saved people's lives from the wreckage.
