Not only drug money, but money laundering through illegal income from call centers is also suspected in Albania.

The latest investigation by EuroJust confirmed that hundreds of European citizens were extorted 50 million euros every three months, from phantom call-centers spread over several countries and tracked since 2018.

But although it has been officially acknowledged in various conferences that parallel to the seizure and arrests, money laundering investigations had begun, so far there is no successfully finalized file against the companies and citizens who launder money from this crime.

In the most recent investigation, where 200 police forces cooperated with EuroJust to uncover fraudulent call centers, it turned out that Albania was the base of this criminal group. Although Albania is failing in the fight against money laundering, it is the European Commission that has often raised its voice through its MoneyVal institution that has designed the country on the gray list for money laundering since 2018.

Economic experts admit that informal money is directly affecting high prices in the field of construction, as it has been confirmed by the Money Laundering Directorate that the sector offers many facilities to make money legal.

"From a report of international institutions against crime and corruption two years ago, it was evident that 60% of the companies that received construction permits have no experience in this sector. A large number of building permits change owner after obtaining building permits. More than half of the transactions for the purchase of money are carried out through cash and not through banks", said economic expert Zef Preçipër TCH.

"The construction market is only for 10% of wealthy individuals in Albania and if they have the opportunity to buy more and more expensive, the prices of apartments will increase. The fact that the prices of the buildings are very high, which basically means that the investors have very deep pockets, while there is no financial pressure to lower the prices, it shows that the circulation of illegal money is quite high", said the journalist Gjergj Erebara.

Through official data, SPAK showed that from the assets created by drug trafficking, it seized for one year almost 19 million euros from the bank accounts of persons prosecuted for trafficking, where many of the assets were real estate. For call centers, the investigation is zero.
