Along the sidewalk of Via Bissolati and in front of the Bar Centrale, opposite Piazza Roma, bloodstains show the traces of the crime that took place on Sunday evening in Vescovato, a town of less than 4,000 inhabitants in the province of Cremona.
Mattia Miraglia, 32 years old, originally from Sicily, a driver, with no criminal record and residing in Vescovato, stabbed 24-year-old Albanian Nurian Dalipaj in the throat, while also wounding the latter's 20-year-old brother in the stomach.
The 32-year-old himself, who suffered an injury to his hand, is under police surveillance at the Maggiore Hospital, in a state of arrest, under investigation for murder and attempted murder. According to the investigation, it is a crime of passion.
According to the reconstruction of the event by the carabinieri, it all started with an argument in a bar in Cremona, where Miraglia's ex-girlfriend works. At around 11:00 p.m., he went to the bar and saw the girl talking to Dalipaj, her longtime friend, as well as another young man who has not yet been identified.
Miraglia allegedly asked the Albanian to follow him out of the bar, into the street. Initially the two talked, but then they fought with fists. The people present separated them. After that, the 32-year-old got back in the car and went to his home in Vescovato, on Via Cairoli.
A short time later, Dalipaj arrived at his apartment with his two brothers. According to investigators, Miraglia heard them coming, came out of the house with a kitchen knife in his hand and asked them to leave. A fight then broke out that ended in tragedy.
The Dalipaj brothers were taken by car to the Maggiore Hospital in Cremona, where the 24-year-old and the 20-year-old arrived in critical condition. Nurian Dalipaj died shortly afterwards, while his brother underwent surgery. He is currently in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition.
Two of Miraglia's friends express surprise:
"We would never have thought it could end like this. The cause was a girl with whom they both had had an affair. Even a month earlier, Dalipaj had gone to our friend's house.
"Then Mattia called the carabinieri; this time he should have done the same, but we don't know what happened to him. It was a situation that had been going on for a long time. Mattia was provoked, we have no other explanation," they said.
Vescovato is shocked and Mayor Alfredo Gorni has said that such an event cannot represent the community. (Corriere)
